Anthropic published a support document, "How Claude Marks AI-Generated Content," saying supported Claude models would embed an imperceptible watermark in generated text and digitally sign AI-made files/images, to comply with the EU AI Act. The document did not explain the mechanism.
“it weaves an imperceptible watermark directly into the text itself. You won’t see it, and it doesn’t change the meaning, quality, or readability of Claude’s response.”

JUST IN: Claude will now invisibly watermark AI-generated text so it can be detected after being copied & pasted.

C
To comply with the EU AI Act, Anthropic will now watermark text and photos created by Claude and digitally sign files it creates to indicate they were generated by AI. So going forward text generated by Claude will be detectable as generated by AI programmatically.

Scott Aaronson talks about his project at OpenAI to do this^You can carefully select which pseudorandom number generator (prng) you use to be able to id text of a certain length. I expect there is some performance characteristic you have to manage since you're doing this on every inference, but once you do that it doesn't change the output in any…
-
They address this in the presentation how if the hash function is indistinguishable from random (and CSPRNGs like say SHA-256 are if you don't know the key) and the candidates you use in your tournaments are the top n ranked candidates with equal scores, then the distribution of the LLM + SynthID ends up matching the distribution of the LLM alone…

Anthropic added a new support page today with details about how they would comply with Article 50 of the EU AI Act. As a result, models released in the EU will support machine-readable marking at launch, including text generated via APIs and through providers like AWS, Microsoft and Google…

Anthropic says new Claude models will embed invisible watermarks in all generated text, everywhere Claude is offered. The watermark is part of the text, it isn't metadata: “it will travel with the text when it's copied and pasted elsewhere, and may persist through some editing.” [image]

If LLM watermarks became industry standard, it'd be very interesting. I’ve seen people saying scammers would retype the document but… I dunno. I still regularly see chatbot prompts left in emails or student assignments. Most people are very lazy.
-
Is the detection mechanism going to be open, free, and possible to run locally without prostrating to an opaque third-party company that will do whatever they want with the text content provided (including using it for training), and take no responsibility in case of false-positives for which there can exist no proof or evidence against by the…
-
It does affect the text then? One couls say that it doesn't matter since the chosen output would have been random, but random is a choice nonetheless, an evolutionary mutation in darwinistic terms. And as we know in evolutionary systems, random brings a much better output than a chosen one. You what I mean?

If I read Anthropic's new watermarking policy correctly, not only will Claude watermark text it writes as AI (fair enough), if I upload text *I* write and ask Claude to copy edit, Claude will now watermark my (human written, AI-copy edited) text as AI, which seems ridiculous... [image]

Anthropic is making its AI-generated content easier to identify, in compliance with EU rules.

> When a supported Claude model generates text, it weaves an imperceptible watermark directly into the text itself. You won’t see it, and it doesn’t change the meaning, quality, or readability of Claude’s response.I'd like to know a lot more about how that works.A lot of my interactions with Claude return pretty precise text. If I ask it to edit a…

This just makes AI less useful because it’s more worried about maintaining a hash than actually providing the best result.
-
This is huge news! And yes, it applies to US Anthropic users also. Big implications for the legal profession, content creators and beyond. Moving forward all Claude-written text will carry a Claude watermark. This watermark makes detecting AI-generated writing easy. Court [image]
-
this is interesting; presumably apart from EU compliance this is also about preventing model collapse in the longer-term, so they *should* be incentivized to do it—and for book-length texts, it certainly ought to work
-
I've heard that this kind of watermarking process works by biassing the statistical sampling towards a partition of the set of possible next tokens (red set and green set), at each position. It might only be a slight nudge each time, but over a sequence of tokens, the likelihood of repeating the bias by chance is increasingly improbable. The bias…

The era of unprovable AI writing just ended. Starting August 2, every new Claude model weaves an invisible watermark into the words it generates. Copy it, paste it into an email, a blog post, a college essay, and the watermark travels with the text. Anthropic will publish the

Anthropic says it will add watermarks, which will remain even after copy-pasting, to text generated by its AI models including Claude

>I'd like to know a lot more about how that works. My guess is that it works like Gemini's SynthID: by altering the logprobs of the next token.Like, for every 10th token, instead of outputting the most probable, it outputs the 17th most probable, or something. (Obviously it's way more complicated but I think conceptually this is how it works.) No…

I'm still confused on how it doesn't influence the models output to be the most accurate

If another model is used to rewrite text generated by new versions of Claude, it will instantly crash and destroy the computer it runs on. Anthropic is currently trying to mitigate that people who read such text sometimes suffer (mild, rare) brain damage, for unknown reasons
-
Wow. At last, Anthropic is going to add watermarking to Claude AI-generated text. Sure, people will find ways to evade it, but at least there'll be a norm of transparency, and we'll get to see whether watermarking works in the real world. — Thank you, EU AI Act! — support.claude.com/en/articles/ ...
