In a BBC Big Boss Interview, Microsoft president Brad Smith argued that AI is less regulated than consumer products like milk and washing machines. He called for binding global safety rules including legal requirements for incident reporting when AI systems malfunction, kill switches to pause runaway systems, and independent government evaluators to vet new AI products before release.
“Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection.”
