It is not amyloid plaques that cause sleep loss in Alzheimer’s disease but microglia. The appearance of plaques cost Alzheimer’s mice 1.5-2 hours of sleep per night. Microglia-blocking drugs gave the Alzheimer’s mice an extra two hours of sleep per night, extending restorative sleep periods.
