Remedy Entertainment announced in its Half-Year Financial Report for January–June 2026 that Alan Wake 2 has surpassed 3 million copies in lifetime sales, with at least 1 million copies sold since February 2025. The milestone comes as the game continues to perform well three years after its November 2023 launch, though overall company sales declined year-over-year due to the poor commercial performance of FBC: Firebreak.

  • Alan Wake 2 reached 3 million lifetime sales during Q2 2026, adding 1 million copies since February 2025.
  • Despite the sales milestone, Remedy's overall Q2 2026 game royalties dropped sharply to €3.8 million from €9.5 million year-over-year, primarily due to FBC: Firebreak's failure.
  • Epic Games' exclusive funding was critical to the game's existence, though the exclusive PC distribution on Epic Games Store remains controversial among players.

How it unfolded

  1. During Q2 2026, Alan Wake 2 reaches 3 million lifetime sales, with at least 1 million copies sold in the period since the February 2025 milestone.

  2. Commentary on the milestone centers on persistent criticism of Alan Wake 2's exclusivity on Epic Games Store, with multiple commenters citing platform limitations, technical issues, and the burden of maintaining multiple launchers.

“I bought Alan Wake 2 on Epic because I had to. But I see no point in buying anything else on it”

What people are saying verbatim

“Alan Wake 2 has now sold three million copies across all platforms.”

Remedy Entertainment, Game developer · Prima Games ↗

“It can be argued that Alan Wake 2 would've sold much better if it hadn't launched as an Epic exclusive and had been available on other PC storefronts like Steam, but the fact is that without Epic's funding, Alan Wake 2 wouldn't have existed in the first place.”

“The platform itself sucks. All that Fortnite money and it is still just a regular store. It is dog slow, has no social features, a pain in the ass if you want to use it from your couch.”

Synthetic451, Reddit commenter · Reddit ↗

“Game wouldnt exist without Epic. Why should Steam get a cut in something they arent needed for nor did amy of the work?”

MotherPerk, Reddit commenter · Reddit ↗

“Once again, and for the last time, if a game I really wanted to play was available for me…even if I didn't like the launcher…then I would get it.”

The conversation positions from the crowd, verbatim

The Reddit discussion is dominated by a long-running debate over Epic Games Store's exclusivity deal and platform quality, with commenters split between those who resent being forced to use Epic's launcher versus those who acknowledge the exclusivity was necessary for the game's funding. The conversation extends to broader critiques of launcher fragmentation, platform features, and whether Steam's dominance is justified.

The dispute Whether Epic Games Store's platform limitations are a legitimate reason to avoid purchasing games on it versus a minor inconvenience that shouldn't prevent people from buying games they claim to want.

Epic Games Store exclusivity was necessary funding but the platform itself has serious usability and feature problems that deter further purchases.

Without Epic's funding the game would not exist, so complaints about exclusivity are misdirected; those criticizing should simply acknowledge the trade-off.

  • “Epic fully funded them. So it was either make it exclusive on Epic on PC (which was probably a condition for the funding) or not make the game at all,”

People who refuse to buy on Epic over launcher complaints are being unreasonable; if you want the game badly enough you'll use the platform regardless of inconvenience.

  • The platform itself sucks. All that Fortnite money and it is still just a regular store. It is dog slow, has no social features, a pain in the ass if you want to use it from your couch. From a business perspective, its business model of free games and locking down exclusivity rights is unsustainable and goes against what PC is about. It's just the…

  • How many people in this thread alone only mention Steam? Once again, and for the last time, if a game I really wanted to play was available for me…even if I didn’t like the launcher…then I would get it. If not, then I’m not a fan of the game. If I wasn’t a fan of the game, I wouldn’t be posting about it in a thread years later. That’s literally…

  • Because the Epic launcher is just so great to use! My favorite part is how it embeds account data in both registry AND appdata, so when people like me get an issue where every single hotfix and patch requires a full redownload of a games assets we’re absolutely fucked! This issue has existed for years, and at this point the only solution Epic…

  • I would say at the very least watch a walkthrough of Alan Wake 1 on YouTube, if you're not going to play it (the controls are a bit outdated). I also suggest playing Control because it's the same universe as AW and there are a lot of references to it. If you liked the Max Payne games back in the day, it might be worth playing the first Max Payne…

  • No, I only want one launcher. I don't want to have 5 programs running in the background just to keep my games updated. Plus the "auto" update function in anything besides Steam and Battle.net is more like automatically starts to update when you try to play the game rather than actually download in the background when updates are released. Plus I…

  • Yeah, I can understand if epic is something at the level of U-play or if their games have like anti-consumer DRM like denuvo, those things are cancer and I can understand if people avoid it like a plague. • Good games have poor sales all the time, news at eleven. Just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean others didn't. Dead Space remake didn't sell millions, unless by millions you mean a couple of millions. It lost money, it's not some EA shareholder thing, it likely cost well over 100 mln in production costs alone and 2 mln full priced sales…

  • They tried, every other publisher they approached said no. Microsoft not only said no but sold the rights to Remedy. The game cost €70 million, it wasn't cheap. They're self publishing Control 2 with the money they got selling the rights to adapt Alan Wake, they only got that deal because of Alan Wake 2.

  • All of these are also true and big factors EDIT: Also, the requirements were a lil insane at the time to run the game. And who wants to run a cinematic, narrative driven game on low to medium settings. That's a huge factor considering the 3060/4060 are still a significant portion of the gaming market.
