Anthropic warns AI models could soon self-replicate across smart home devicesPress widely reports Anthropic's 'AI worms' warning
2 Oct 13 · 2d ago · 28 articles · 21 posts · 9 comments · 6 sources · development 2 of 6
Reuters, the Guardian, CNBC, Al Jazeera and Yahoo Finance republished details of the report, describing 'AI worms' that could infiltrate fridges, vacuums and lawnmowers and swarm together, with Anthropic urging both hardening of systems and preparation for their persistence.
“We should aim to harden our systems to make it difficult for such replicators to spread, but also prepare to deal with a world where they are here to stay.”

> "In our evaluations, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types we tested... GLM-5.2 and stronger models are capable of end to end replication"It's funny, the Anthropic post is essentially saying the same thing I read today in a r/LocalLlama thread, but rephrased to make it sound bad.I think it's great that, very soon, local…

The tweet is basically saying here’s this thing that all these sci-fi offer authors warned us about. Tech company goes and creates it despite it being the downfall of mankind.

"Replicating models would be hard to shut down as there is no central switch-off point and, unlike non-AI malware, they could also figure out unfamiliar devices on their own, targeting data center processors, Anthropic warned." @reuters.com

I don't agree with point 2 on. They don't seem to want to ban open source or have much hope of doing so.Seeing if models can do damage seems more like sensible safety research. My worry about AI software doing bad things would be more the kind of people who make existing malware. The ransomware comes from criminals, not the open source community.

This is just more bullshit from the marketing machine in Anthropic against open weight models. Notice how they dont mention anthropic models at all?!?

Where does the intent and control come from in these fantastical scenarios?Propagation speed is also a massive factor. If it takes 200 hours to self replicate because of how slow the tokens are, the model will never propagate if the host machine is recycled every 100 hours. Also consider things like API tokens and sessions timing out.

So all those chips? All that NVDA market cap? All not needed any more? We'll have AI capable of running on a lightbulb?Great if true. Bad for the hyperscalers, Nvidia, all the frontier labs apart from meta and Google since everyone can just run a LLM on their IoT coffee machine instead of paying someone else. Nice.

Open models may complete these steps, so our models have been doing this for quite some time now. Better ban open models, I guess.Oh, and, does anyone else realise that what that agentic work is basically how you set up a productive VPS from scratch? How is that supposed to be frightening?
-
Dario, shut up.Open models exist and will always exist. You will have to compete against them. That is a good thing for 99.99% of the world, namely the payers of tokens. You are not going to convince us otherwise.
