A viral mastodon post by Dara Kerr characterized Anthropic's messaging as alarmist self-promotion, encapsulating a strand of mockery running through the coverage.

bullshit. if the ai models are so lightweight they can run on a smart fridge, why the hell are they building data centers? this is nonsense.

Anthropic is warning that small AI models could soon be able to self-replicate across consumer IoT devices, from Android TV boxes to smart ovens, creating distributed botnets capable of running AI workloads without relying on data centers. https://www. bleepingcomputer.com/news/secu…
-
That’s not how ai models run, for now. An industrious model could write itself to work this way. We just can’t predict how it will change itself or adapt.
-
News: massive losses, IPO delayed. Moments later: Anthropic reports its AI is so powerful might punch God in the face and give Jesus a swirly. It's a mystery why they keep making these ridiculous claims, I just can't see any reason for it.

You don't have to worry about this attack vector. The kind of devices that such an attack would target aren't capable of this sort of workload.
-
"Technology that famously needs 100s of massive server halls with diesel generators running 24/7 to work could move into your microwave" I don't think that's true, man.

No, not worrisome at all. I hate this timeline. “…small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices.” https://www. anthropic.com/research/self-re plicating-ai
-
We don't. This is just baseless fear mongering. An attack like this would be impractical.

"My wife asked me why I carry a gun in the house; I looked at her and said "Decepticons". She laughed, I laughed, the toaster laughed, I shot the toaster, it was a good time."

MFer, does your thermostat have 128GB RAM and a couple of H100s inside? JFC.
-
Just unplug it. It doesn’t seem that complicated.
-
I am begging outlets to show less credulity to these fucking press releases. Self-replicate to where? All those spare data centers with extra RAM just sitting around? They are just creating as many smokescreens as possible for when they scale back that aren't their insane financial incompetence.
-
Dog that's just a computer virus. And I imagine any AI trying to do this would run into the same issues as a regular virus. Yet more reason to prosecute the bastards
-
This thing could run in your thermostat but also we need to buy the world’s entire supply of RAM for it
-
TIL apparently my fridge has 4xB300 GPUs and 800GB of RAM to run these models. No wonder there is a RAM shortage
-
Amodei is explicitly saying this risk is from non-Anthropic, small, open-source models. i.e. the evil competition which must be exterminated.
-
I'll continue to not have smart devices in my home then
-
Then stop working on it! What the fuck am I supposed to do about it.
-
We used to prosecute folks who unleashed computer viruses, right? Seems like there must be some applicable law here
-
None of my smart home devices has enough compute or memory to load anything Anthropic makes.

Stop reporting these fictions unchallenged if you don't want to go down with the con men
-
You don't need to report it when they write bad self-insert fanfiction.
-
They are just trying dumb scifi shit to see if anyone will believe it. The ratio of latency to RAM and processing power means a global network of smart fridges would take weeks just to generate one shirtless picture of Trump jacking off a bald eagle
