We evaluated Gemini 4 Argon in 100 unsaturated, competitive and cooperative coding environments. It's roughly in between Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 in our testing, so it's maybe 2 months behind the frontier.Google's major releases have usually done pretty well on our benchmarks because they're good at hard problems and open-ended decision making (with…

One thing I've observed Gemini being the best is in the context of non-western stuff. Like, when I ask about obscure srilankan food, or chat about Indian/Tamil movies or songs, Religious customs & beliefs, Gemini almost always answers accurately and very close to how helpful they are in Anglosphere related topics. ChatGPT also does do a bit better…

Ran on our Data Analytics benchmark: https://plotly.com/blog/gemini-4-argon-plotly-data-analytics...Excellent model. Same price and score as Opus 5.5 in our 23 question exam. This size / class of model is now a bit overpowered for these short-horizon data analytics tasks. OpenAI 6.1-Sol, Haiku 5.5, GLM 5.3 Flash all achieve about the same results…

> This is the first near-frontier model we've caught in infinite reasoning loops in a long timeDepends on where you draw the line for "near frontier model", but the current leading open-weights model, MiMo-v2.6, has exactly this problem. They released a fix on Hugging Face[1], but as of two days ago the model available via Xiaomi's own API still…

I have a project I am working on where I wanted to have nice docs, and so I have some slop docs sitting there as placeholders until I get around to writing them, awful claudish stuffI've actually spent some effort trying to make them halfway decent placeholders by putting together a skill based on diataxis framework (https://diataxis.fr/) that at…

They removed the 3.1 pro model from their offer, and version 4 is locked to ultra customers, so basically pro customers are paying for gemini 3 flash.State of affairs [1]:> My whole project and career depended on the 3.1 pro workflow. Please, bring it back[1]

Excellent timing. I've been working on a UAV design and simulation tool and primarily using Flash 3.8 for the code gen grunt work because Claude hits weekly limits way too quickly. It's been working well this way. Flash 3.8 seems very efficient and i don't hit the limits before the refresh. Assuming Argon is similarly efficient then hopefully it…

Looks like safety features are a bit strange.https://imgur.com/a/fWo92RISeems to be just deleting anything that a safety filter triggers on. I don't know if I like this more or less than what Anthropic does where they train the model to actively refuse.
-
Like it's a top tier model, so does that mean it is at the level of Opus 5.5 (claude) or 6.1 Sol (chatgpt)? I don't think I can trust the benchmarks Google released themselves, but from what users say, it seems like that. Since I already use both ChatGPT and Claude, I wonder if there is really any reason to also use this.
-
I wonder if it's as good at "soft skills" as previous Gemini models were. Google was typically better in that department in my experience than either OpenAI or Anthropic, whose frontier models are focused on coding and verifiable task at the expense of all else.

Is there something one could try out with not crazy costs? E.g. for $250? I've got some rpi 4 (and rpi zero w) laying around waiting to be used if that helps.Seeing prices like 5k EUR is a bit too much for a hobby.

Thanks for this substantive review -- anecdotally, I've felt many in the gemini series have pretty good visual sense/image processing -- do you guys have any tests in these areas, and if so, what is your take?

The Google Gemini subscription landscape is such a mess... gemini.google.com welcomes me with "Look what you can do with Gemini 4", but the model selection is 3.6 Flash, 3.8 Thinking, and 3.1 Pro...

Big if true. Opus 5.5 is a lot better than 5.0 but I find it maddening thay no single model released in the past ~year can write prose with a clear and coherent voice. I blame RL on programming tasks.
-
One thing to notice: Now, even in EU, if you turn on Google activity (so that you can see chat history), Google will train on your data. I remember it wasn't the case when in 2.5 pro period.
-
I'm a bit overwhelmed by Google's selection of AI environments (Antigravity, AI Studio, Gemini Platform etc.). If I just want the equivalent of OpenAI Codex, which one do I use?
-
How is Claude Opus 5.5 beating Gemini 4 Argon on benchmarks but everyone here is calling Argon a step change? I need to come up with my own benchmarks ...
-
At this point I'm interested less in how well a model can code, but more in how well it can produce code that humans can understand.
-
I think the model can be actually nice for co-working. I dont' know much about gemeni models but is this worthful?
-
What programming languages? HTML/Javascript or C++/Rust, it makes a difference you know.
-
That's been an issue since Flash 3.5, they probably have been unable to pin down the cause
