YouTube announced on August 10 that it is raising eligibility thresholds for new creators to join its Partner Program and earn money from ads and subscriptions. The requirement doubles to 8,000 qualified watch hours per year (or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days), up from the current 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. The change takes effect February 1, 2027, and does not affect creators already in the Partner Program.
- New YouTube creators must now reach 8,000 watch hours yearly (or 20M Shorts views in 90 days) to monetize—double the prior 4,000-hour threshold—effective February 1, 2027.
- Existing Partner Program members are unaffected; change applies only to new creators seeking entry.
- YouTube justified the move citing platform growth (200B daily Shorts views), but community reaction ranges from skepticism about feasibility to accusations of gatekeeping.
- YouTube simultaneously expanded Premium Lite subscription globally, claiming subscription revenue provides better creator earnings than ad revenue alone.
How it unfolded

Analysis Predictions of creator response changes
A Reddit commenter anticipates that the policy will trigger an 'ad-pocalypse' and predicts monetized creators will shift toward members-only content to survive.
“So, well be getting another "ad-pocalypse"? Guessing monetized creators will start pushing more "members-only" videos soon to survive.”

Reaction Mixed feelings from affected creators
A creator who took 8 months to reach 4,000 watch hours expresses sympathy for those now facing doubled requirements, saying it 'feels so unfair.'
“I feel so sorry for anyone who is working to 4k watch time. It took me 8 months on ThatNukemGuy to get there. I know your pain, this feels so unfair to you.”

Reaction Skepticism about feasibility
A commenter on Bluesky characterizes the new 8,000-hour threshold as 'nigh on impossible' for most channels and suggests YouTube doesn't want to pay creators.
“4000 hours is nigh on impossible for the vast majority of channels. 8000 hours? YT basically don't want to pay anyone for providing them with material.”

Reaction Creator frustration emerges online
Social media users begin reacting to the announcement. One commenter expresses strong criticism, calling it theft and suggesting users switch to alternative platforms.
“If Google/YouTube is stealing monetisation from all small creators, I suggest we all steal from them. Get an alternative client and f-em up!”

Report Media coverage spreads across outlets
Multiple publications including TechCrunch, The Verge, Engadget, Business Insider, and Digital Music News report on the policy change, emphasizing that it makes monetization harder for new creators.

Event YouTube announces doubled monetization thresholds
YouTube announced new eligibility requirements for creator monetization. New creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, double the current thresholds of 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.
What people are saying verbatim
“With these additional subscribers, creators can expect higher earnings: when a user signs up for Premium, partners, on average, earn more than when the user was watching ads.”

BREAKING: In latest ripoff of creators, YouTube massively increases requirements for monetization
-
Oof. Not good for anyone who isn't already in the Partner Program. 4000 hours is nigh on impossible for the vast majority of channels. 8000 hours? YT basically don't want to pay anyone for providing them with material.

I order a book shelf and there is a link to a YouTube showing assembly instructions. When I click a link to Insta, I get sent to a log in page. I thought TikTok was about short form videos only? If you only watch a small part of YouTube’s content, I can understand how you would think these are similar. These are not the same. They could be, but…

I am very torn about these Youtube updates. I feel so sorry for anyone who is working to 4k watch time. It took me 8 months on ThatNukemGuy to get there. I know your pain, this feels so unfair to you.

This has nothing to do with AI slop flooding the platform. YouTube raises the requirements every time a certain number of partners are accepted into the program in order to avoid massive drops of revenue for creators from ads and youtube premium. I'm pretty sure they even raised a lot of the criteria required for AI channels to even qualify.

YouTube have the software to detect it, there’s no use in blaming the AI tools because the people making and producing the ai content have no incentive to stop, it requires the pressure of the corporations and the government

Ouch. My #Youtube content has slowed down this year, but I was getting close to qualifying for Partner. The current req is 4k longform watch hrs/year OR 10mil shorts views/90 days—so, threshold will double! Changes happen on 01FEB, so there's still time! — Source: blog.youtube/news-and-eve... …
