Sean Murray told Kotaku and PC Gamer that he originally planned a major reveal of Light No Fire at Summer Game Fest 2024, roughly six months after the game's initial 90-second teaser at the 2023 Game Awards. But the teaser's unexpected success—20 million views, #2 on Steam wishlists—convinced him to stop marketing and keep working quietly instead. Murray plays the game most days and says Hello Games has been "ready" to show more for a while, but is content staying in what he calls his "own little cave" rather than repeating the heavy press circuit that backfired when No Man's Sky launched.
- Murray had planned a major gameplay reveal at Summer Game Fest 2024 but canceled it after the initial teaser unexpectedly hit 20 million views and #2 on Steam wishlists.
- He is deliberately avoiding the marketing-heavy approach that damaged No Man's Sky's launch reputation, letting the game's momentum speak for itself instead.
- Light No Fire remains in active development with no public release window, though Murray plays it most days and Hello Games says it is ready to show whenever needed.
- The strategy represents a reversal: instead of overpromising in press, Murray is now under-communicating to avoid repeating past mistakes.
How it unfolded
-
Murray spoke to Kotaku and PC Gamer during No Man's Sky's 10th anniversary, revealing his original plan and the reasoning behind abandoning public reveals.
“I don't think people realize just how ambitious it is and how crazy it is. And I look forward to people finding that out and to showing them. But I'm very happy right now just working on it in my own little cave and not having to worry…”

Citing the game's viral success and his past experience with overhyping No Man's Sky, Murray chose to stop public reveals and focus on development in private.
“we've like shot up the Steam wishlist charts; we're like number two on there. And I was just like, 'OK, that's enough. You know, we don't need to say any more. Why? Why do any marketing?'”

“I thought we would have chatted about it more by now. We dropped a trailer like two years ago, two and a half years ago, and I had a plan of like, 'OK, we'll do this. We'll tease it.'”

“The reality is, it was incredibly popular. We just shot up like the Steam wish list charts. There's, like, 20 million views on that tease. We're the number two game on the [Steam] wishlist.”

The conversation positions from the crowd, verbatim
The Reddit discussion focuses heavily on revisiting No Man's Sky's troubled launch and Murray's past behavior, with users divided on whether his current silence reflects genuine humility or self-protection. The conversation is dominated by tensions over the game's original misleading marketing, pricing practices, and Murray's track record of unfulfilled promises.
The dispute Whether Murray's current silence represents genuine lesson-learning and redemption or merely strategic silence to protect reputation after a track record of broken promises.
Murray and Hello Games earned credit for correcting course post-launch; silence now is justified restraint after learning hard lessons.

“Yeah he definitely was just spit balling his dream features in real time in those teasers and interviews...Which was a monumental mistake that could have justifiably sunk the entire company. If they had not really buckled down and course…”

“Yeah, though unlike Molyneux, Murray shut his yap and they buckled down to do right by the players.”

Murray's silence is just damage control; his original promises were lies and many still haven't been delivered even after a decade.
-
“Absolutely untrue, they self-published & only had Sony as a publisher for the Playstation port. In fact, Sony was the one stepping in, telling him to stop lying about the game any time he sees a camera. And many of the lies Murray told on…”

“Considering the launch of No Man's Sky, it would be incredibly refreshing of they instead promised nothing and delivered everything.”

No Man's Sky ultimately became a solid open-world sandbox with breadth across many systems, comparable to other successful games like GTA.

“No mans sky is a game that has tons of features, all implemented well but none are phenomenal. It's not specialized, and quite a few games are successful in this sphere. GTA is a prime example.”

No, dipshit, it doesn’t matter because you’re moving goalposts. Just because of someone else’s ‘misleading’ phrase from misquoting you, the exact defense you’re trying to claim. So don’t go being a fucking hypocrite trying to say you can use that claim but they can’t. It doesn’t matter because it’s irrelevant to the original issue at hand, that…

Yeah he definitely was just spit balling his dream features in real time in those teasers and interviews. All things that I am 110% sure they intended to have, but then they failed to actually implement. So basically we got to see the whole behind the scenes dream board as if it was actually functional features. Which was a monumental mistake that…

No mans sky is a game that has tons of features, all implemented well but none are phenomenal. It’s not specialized, and quite a few games are successful in this sphere. GTA is a prime example, and your statement could be seen as also true. Tons of features. Both games are not made for linear progression, they’re a sandbox for enjoyment.

It's still the full base price. That was never discounted, like even Rockstar did with GTAV, and other games that get permanently reduced in price. Of course they run temporary promotions to get the game to appear in Steam sales. And "why lie?" is a hilarious question when talking about No Man's Sky.
-
Yeah, though unlike Molyneux, Murray shut his yap and they buckled down to do right by the players. Molyneux just runs off whatever next project he's going overhype and undersell while shitting on the previous attempt.

So it’s not “discounted” it’s just a “promotion that reduces its price to appear as a sale”. You are hilarious!
-
I'm surprised people actually backed Molyneux considering his track record even before Microsoft.

“There will in fact be other players playing the game at the same time. I can promise you that.”
