Who remembers the class to learn how to use the card file? Third grade?

I miss card catalogues. Genuinely. The best part about using them was that while searching for what you needed, some random other title would catch your eye and you’d end up checking out an unplanned book. It was always a wonderful adventure 🥰

Yes and librarians who came to your rescue when you couldn't find what you were looking for - and still do; though, now it's on the computer.

I went to college to study how to compose them and keep them organized and updated. Have a degree in them. Still have my college textbooks instructing how to create them. 😊

Card catalog & Dewey Decimal sty system In elementary school we had to learn this from kindergarten on Its interesting that now kids have less of a knowledge of how to use resources how to think critically

My high school actually offered a Library Science course, so I was able to read shelves, process new acquisitions and work the checkout desk for credit toward graduation. Sheer heaven.

I took my son to get his card when he was 6. He's been using mine til then. I was SO EXCITED to show him the new game of looking it up and finding it...the hulking wood dresser? Armoir? Cabinet?...the CARD CATALOG. I looked and looked. And asked the bored teen volunteer who pointed at the computer.😩

Oh my God. The smell of the oaktag and finger sweat. The golf pencils....oh ohhhhh what about the squares of scrap paper? She used to let me use the big bladed paper-cutter instead of ripping them because I was RESPONSIBLE.

I have a lovely oak card catalogue that I got when UVA sold their old library furniture. It’s great for storing small craft items.

Me! I typed and filed thousands of those cards during my 30 year career.

I spent many an hour going through those back in school, when I was younger of course, and even helping the librarian fix a few, was a blast but I know many would have been bored out of their minds but still fun memories.

Man, I filed and weeded enough of those little suckers to write my grocery list on the back of until the end of time. And when my library automated, I took home piles of them for exactly that purpose. I get a little ping of nostalgia every time I go shopping.
