Weirdly 12 Angry Men is a very original premise. It sounds unoriginal and seems like it would make for a great movie staple but it's one of the only movies to ever do it which is pretty wild. I think they hit the grand slam out of the gate and no one else wants to compete with it.

The Third Man. Average guy looks for old friend who might give him a job, tries to solve mystery of friend’s disappearance (foul play?), finds out that friend is just a petty crook. Oh and he doesn’t get the girl. And it’s a masterpiece.
