Anthropic: Zhipu AI's open GLM-5.3 does cyber exploits with weak safeguards
Anthropic says GLM-5.3's safeguards against malicious use can be bypassed up to 100% of the time, unlike its own Claude models.

What to know
- Anthropic finds GLM-5.3, an open-weight model from China's Zhipu AI (Z.ai), can build end-to-end cyber exploits at rates similar to Anthropic's own Claude Mythos Preview.
- Unlike Claude models, GLM-5.3's safeguards against misuse can reportedly be bypassed 64-100% of the time with simple techniques, and the model is freely downloadable.
- NIST's CAISI independently rated GLM-5.3 the most cyber-capable open-weight model released to date, about four months behind the US frontier.
- Some commenters counter that labs like Anthropic warn about open models' risks while limiting defenders' access to their own, more capable, restricted models.

Critics call out Anthropic's own access restrictions
A Mastodon user argued that AI labs like Anthropic warn about the dangers of open models usable by defenders while simultaneously restricting defenders' access to their own frontier models.
“The new AI conglomerates are publishing documents warning about the dangers of semi-open models that defenders can actually use, while those same conglomerates are restricting defenders’ access to their own models.”

Anthropic just sounded the alarm on GLM-5.3’s cyber capabilities. We built on it. OrcaCyber Zero 1.0 is based on the GLM-5.3, post-trained specifically for vulnerability research, exploit reproduction, red teaming, and autonomous cyber workflows. 98.01% pass@1 on CyberGym L1.

Anthropic has to use this wedge (and future ones) to move regulatory action against the Chinese models or their IPO is going to be really problematic.(Ironic, though, that I haven't heard of any Chinese models "escaping" which Anthropic and OpenAI both seem to have issues with...)Like Chinese electric cars, the American producers cannot compete…

Anthropic's post surfaces on Hacker News and social platforms
The research post drew discussion on Hacker News (99 comments) and was shared across Mastodon, with some users criticizing Anthropic's framing rather than the underlying risk.
“We find that attackers can bypass GLM-5.3’s safeguards between 64% and 100% of the time with simple techniques in our simulated tests.”

background
Anthropic details how easily GLM-5.3's safeguards are bypassed — Anthropic published an analysis showing GLM-5.3 develops end-to-end exploits at rates similar to Claude Mythos Preview (50/410 vs. 56/410 on ExploitBench), but that simple techniques bypass GLM-5.3's safeguards between 64% and 100% of the time, whereas the same attacks failed against safeguarded Claude models.

background
NIST's CAISI assesses GLM-5.3's cyber capabilities — NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation published its own assessment, finding GLM-5.3 to be the most cyber-capable open-weight model released to date, lagging the US frontier by about four months on aggregate cyber benchmarks.
-
background
Anthropic releases Claude Mythos Preview under limited access — Anthropic announced Claude Mythos Preview, the first AI model able to autonomously build sophisticated, end-to-end cyber exploits, and restricted access via Project Glasswing so trusted defenders could find vulnerabilities before malicious actors gained similarly capable models.

Ok, Anthropic openly confirming GLM-5.3 to be close to Mythos was a bit surprising at first. But upon closer inspection, it screams "please help us gatekeep cyber defense capabilities so we can protect our revenue". https://www. anthropic.com/research/glm-5-3 -and-the-spread-of-advanced-cyber-capabilities

NIST finds GLM-5.3 to be the most cyber capable open weight model, passing Kimi K3, but still lagging behind US frontier. Anthropic independently agrees with this.

This is excellent news. I have had problems with OpenAI and Antropic models refusing legit security (and sometimes even benign) work. Thanks Antropic team for letting me know that this option exist! While at it, could you also have a look at mimo 2.6 pro? Xiaomi claims it is even better at cybersecurity although I would prefer an independent review…

> A cloudflare lookalikeWas that a page that made it look like one needs to do something as part of the browser/session human verification process? And it was an obfuscated command (an echo cmd iirc)? Sth like this https://www.forcepoint.com/blog/x-labs/odyssey-stealer-attac...Or was it something else?

This is exactly the problem that Anthropic hides in their article. Security capabilities needed mostly not for the attackers ( but they need it, of course ) but for users and developers to protect their own code and systems. I do use glm ( from openrouter and abliteration.ai ), and kimi model for security reviews on pull requests. Claude rejected…

Anthropic posted a report on free chinese open model GLM-5.3. It reads like a product sheet. GLM-5.3 is very strong in cybersecurity tasks. Builds Chrome exploits nearly as well as Claude Mythos Preview (12% vs 14%), the model Anthropic considered too dangerous to release. Mythos for vetted users, ...
-
Anthropic isn't stupid though. They know exactly how a report like this plays in Washington. It's just that the funny thing is that in making the case that GLM-5.3 is dangerous, they're also basically admitting that on one extremely important capability, cybersecurity, a Chinese open-weight model ...

Anthropic doing advertisment for GLM-5.3 was not on my bingo card: Anthropic says Zai's openly downloadable GLM-5.3 approaches Claude Mythos Preview's exploit capabilities, with safeguards that are easy to bypass. On ExploitBench, GLM-5.3 built working browser exploits in 50 of 410 attempts. Mytho...

Anthropic's new report argues Zai's open-weight GLM-5.3 model is comparable to Mythos on cyber capabilities but with far weaker safeguards. They claim GLM-5.3 is just 4 months behind US frontier on cyber and that GLM's safeguards can be removed with 2,200 GPU hours of work. Full report:

Wait, I can't believe Anthropic posted this. Their new research post is a full red team report on someone else's model, GLM-5.3 from Zhipu. The finding is that it builds working exploits almost as well as Claude Mythos Preview. You know, the model Anthropic kept locked away for safety. Except th...

Anthropic - In this post, we share our analysis of GLM-5.3, the latest AI model developed by Zhipu AI (known outside of China as https://z.ai/). Like Claude Mythos Preview, GLM-5.3 has strong capabilities for autonomously building end-to-end cyber exploits. But GLM-5.3 is unlike other fro...

Amazing advert for how awesome GLM 5.3 is, including instructions how to make it even better! “GLM-5.3's lax safeguards significantly increase the cyber capabilities... these capabilities can also benefit defenders working to secure their systems.”
-
tl;dr Anthropic verified and confirms that glm-5.3 is a very very good model and it much more aligned with the human using it then with the corporation training and hosting it. What not to like?

Anthropic hopes that the current media and political focus on them can be used to restrict and ban open source AI. They might even be able to achieve that in some countries.I bet the reason Dario wants to meet with the Australian government, is because he feels like he can convince them to ban open source AI models. Then once Australia does that…

This part of the article really stands out:> On Sept. 17, NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) published its own assessment of GLM-5.3’s cyber capabilities. CAISI found that GLM-5.3 is “the most cyber-capable open-weight model released to date” and that it lags the US frontier by about four months on an aggregate of CAISI’s cyber…

They're advertising GLM for free.Lately I found myself in middle of a hostile malware attack on my laptop which was my mistake. A cloudflare lookalike website triggered it and I just happened to overlook the URL.In panic I headed to Claude and first request was denied. Not looking beyond scope.Desperate - I fired opencode with DeepSeek v4 Flash…

This just makes me want a home lab capable of running GLM 5.3 at a 4bit quant. Also, for what it is worth Qwen Flash Next 3.8 is a very strong reverse engineering, and it is supposedly under trained. Qwen 3.8 27B is also strong. DeepSeek Flash v4 0731 is also a strong local model with abliterated releases that is good at reversing and other cyber…

Yeah, thank god those models have arrived. No thanks to Anthropic and their obnoxious gatekeeping, of course. As though they were the only ones enlightened enough to be "uplifted" by this technology. Now we can actually use this stuff to improve our own security. Point these things at our own machines and let 'em rip until we're not hackable…

Anthropic is so self centered it's hard for me to comprehend. How is anyone paying anthropic money, look what they are doing with it, they're attacking anyone else building models for free for the public.Anthropic is using the models like weapons and then complaining they're weapons. The user should be at fault here, I hope Anthropic is investigated…
