Google opens SynthID Detector to the public, adds OpenAI, Nvidia, Apple support

A website at synthid.com lets anyone check whether an image, video or audio clip carries an AI watermark, expanding a tool Google tested privately since last year.

What to know

  • SynthID Detector at synthid.com is now open to anyone, not just journalists and researchers who had early access since last year's Google I/O.
  • The tool checks a wide range of image, video and audio formats and now also flags content made with OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao AI tools, with Apple support coming soon.
  • Watermark-based detection remains imperfect: different companies use different standards, watermarks can be stripped, and the tool cannot distinguish fully AI-generated content from AI-edited content.

Coverage flags limits of watermark-based detection

Outlets note the tool can't detect all AI content since companies use different watermarking standards, watermarks can be stripped, and the site doesn't distinguish full AI generation from AI-assisted editing.

“AI detection tools like SynthID Detector rely on a patchwork of different standards so there's no such thing as a universal checker.”
