What to know

  • Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, a U.S. citizen of Somali descent, faces a federal terrorism charge after allegedly buying an AK-47-style rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI employee.
  • The case stems from a roughly 22-month undercover operation beginning December 2024, in which Mohamud allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and discussed killing 30 to 60 people.
  • Prosecutors say he specifically targeted the Hmong Arts Celebration at the Mall of America, scheduled for October 24, because it would draw large crowds.
  • Unresolved details include Mohamud's immigration history and the extent of his parents' knowledge, after his father reportedly refused to cooperate with FBI agents in 2025.

“it will be a lot of people.”
