Alex Gibney's 4-Hour 'Musk' Documentary Examines Billionaire's Power and Ethics

Oscar-winning filmmaker profiles the world's richest man without a direct interview, finding him a self-promoter rather than visionary.

What to know

  • Alex Gibney's nearly four-hour documentary examines Elon Musk as a deeply flawed figure—a self-promoter rather than a visionary who has consolidated power across Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter, and Starlink.
  • Gibney did not secure a direct interview with Musk, instead using archival material, interviews with associates (including ex-wife Justine Musk and influencer Ashley St. Clair), and a computer-generated avatar to build the profile.
  • Critics find the film deeply researched but ultimately unsatisfying in explaining how Musk accumulated such power, despite its attempt to position him as reckless and ethically compromised.

LA Times describes Gibney's four-hour profile as exhausting without exhaustiveness

Robert Abele reviews the documentary, highlighting that Gibney did not secure an interview with Musk but found workarounds. Gibney frames the film as a "deeply researched four-hour psych eval" examining how an abundance-minded optimist is actually a "gluttonous, scorched-earth pessimist."

“Is there anything more worrisome about today's tech titans than the fact that they present as abundance-minded optimists but in actuality are gluttonous, scorched-earth pessimists?”
    — Robert Abele

A thoughtful review but having covered Musk for a long time now, nah, he was always a conman. A huckster. A flim-flam merchant.
