Trump's new press secretary Katie Zacharia stumbles out of the gate amid bar-license questions

Katie Zacharia's first White House briefing drew ridicule for its brevity, while reporting raised doubts about her claims to be a licensed lawyer and surfaced old conspiracy-laden posts.

What to know

  • Zacharia's first briefing lasted under 15 minutes and took only three questions, drawing widespread criticism for stiffness and brevity compared with her predecessor Karoline Leavitt.
  • Reporting by Judd Legum and others found no evidence Zacharia, who has long described herself as a lawyer, has ever been licensed to practice law; she told reporters she passed the bar 'when she moved to China,' a country that only licenses its own citizens as lawyers.
  • Deleted social media posts surfaced by CNN, The Bulwark and Popular Information show Zacharia previously promoted Pizzagate-style conspiracy theories accusing Democrats and Hollywood figures of pedophilia.
  • In her debut, Zacharia disclosed that Trump had asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as ambassador to Greece amid allegations she solicited $100,000 from a donor.

Zacharia's claims to be a licensed lawyer appear unsubstantiated, and her 'China' answer raised more questions than it resolved.

  • “Everyone saw the latest disaster with new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, this morning? She calls herself a lawyer. She even has a law degree from Pepperdine and reportedly served as general counsel for a California nonprofit. But…”

Her deleted posts promoting Pizzagate and pedophilia conspiracy theories disqualify her as a credible spokesperson.

The debut itself was a joke, mocked as robotic and scripted.

The scandal is hypocritical theater — Trump's camp projects accusations it will later be found guilty of, and supporters will dismiss any revelations.

  • “It was always projection and in this case strategic. Trump knew the Epstein stuff would come out eventually so he accuses the opponent of his crimes and when it does come out, his supporters dismiss it as “both sides” noise.”

Scrutiny deepens over China bar-exam claim

Follow-up reporting notes that only Chinese citizens are eligible to become licensed lawyers in China, deepening questions about Zacharia's claim with no explanation offered by the White House.

“Asked Tuesday where she was admitted to the bar, Zacharia said "China," where she lived for three years. Only Chinese citizens are eligible to become lawyers in that country. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.”

    • That’s just a lie. You need to take the Legal Exam (法考) to get the license for practicing law in China (basically the bar), and the first requirement is that you have to be a PRC citizen. In the impossible case that she is indeed a Chinese citizen, then she must had abandoned American citizenship because China doesn’t allow dual citizenship.
