Nvidia halts RTX 5090 production, reserves GB202 chips for data center and Pro GPUs
Leaked factory notices suggest Nvidia is discontinuing consumer RTX 5090 cards to allocate the high-end GB202 silicon to more lucrative professional and AI products.

What to know
- Nvidia has reportedly stopped producing RTX 5090 consumer GPUs and will reserve GB202 silicon for data center and professional RTX Pro cards, which command much higher prices.
- The RTX 5080 24GB would become Nvidia's flagship consumer GPU; RTX 5090 inventory from AIBs and retailers could sustain limited availability before depletion.
- The move makes financial sense for Nvidia: professional cards using the same GB202 chips sell for substantially more (RTX Pro 5500 at professional pricing vs. RTX 5090 consumer pricing; RTX 6000 Pro at $15,000).
- Nvidia has not officially confirmed the report; the information comes from leaked factory notices cited by industry leakers.
“Nvidia's recently introduced RTX Pro 5500 features the same number of CUDA cores — 21,760 — as the GeForce RTX 5090, but comes with 84GB of GDDR7 memory instead of 32GB and targets considerably more lucrative professional visualization and AI applications.”

Tom's Hardware confirms Nvidia halting RTX 5090 production, analyzes economic rationale
Tom's Hardware provides detailed analysis stating that the decision makes economic sense for Nvidia: the RTX Pro 5500 with identical CUDA cores to RTX 5090 costs substantially more and includes 84GB memory versus 32GB, while RTX 6000 Pro can sell for $15,000. By discontinuing GB202 consumer cards, Nvidia prevents its own products from competing internally in the lucrative AI sector.
“By discontinuing GB202-based GeForce products, Nvidia could prevent its relatively inexpensive consumer graphics cards from competing with its own professional accelerators in the lucrative AI sector.”

companies are 100% about revenue, not loyalty. the 5090 never really played for the average gamer; the real money sits in AI and data center work‑loads so nvidia is just moving the money where it earns more.
-
the 5090 was always more of a niche beast; the only folks who would actually pay that price are data‑center and AI firms, so nvidia's divesting from gamers makes sense — the avg gamer can just grab a 5080 or newer RTX.

From an NVDA perspective, the key distinction is whether this is only a SKU/channel-allocation rumor or a confirmed production change. The post says the source is an unverified factory message; I’d wait for NVIDIA or board-partner confirmation, then look for a measurable shift in Gaming vs. Data Center revenue, gross margin, or channel inventory…
-
the 5k figure is more hype than real-world use. core gaming workloads peak at 8‑10k rays per second, so a 3090 or even a 3080 is more than enough for current titles. the 5090 price reflects speculation, supply limits and the AI‑centric high yields, not everyday play.

Nvidia is not your friend. true but it will also push the 5080 into a premium spot, squeezing the true high‑end gamer scene. owners of the 5090 end up with a card that’s really only worth its attention‑grabbing price in the AI market, so the whole move is just profit‑first pruning of the consumer side.
-
It’s not repurposing anything, the chip was built for both cards they are putting it in. Repurposing would mean they are converting 5090s into pro cards, they are not, or removing gpus from 5090 boards and putting them on pro boards, they are not, or that the chip was specifically built for just the consumer market and now deciding to use instead…

Everyone is all virtue and altruism until the moment happens, the reality, most will/would and you really have no idea until you are faced with similar. You won’t ever be presented with options of such magnitude so I guess we’ll never know.

if you're already rocking a 5090 you’ll wind up with a more expensive card that will probably stay in your garage for a while, but it won’t get punched in from a warranty pile‑up suddenly— NVIDIA still says it’ll back the existing units for the normal 3‑5 year term. so it's more about the market grinding up a price for the scarce remaining pieces…

If Nvidia thinks the 5090's monstrous power draw and 4 TB/s memory bandwidth would overheat a typical gaming rig, moving it to a data‑center‑grade GPU is a clean way to keep gamers from boiling the case. The rest of the GB202 chips can then go to RTX PRO to hit those AI margins.
-
Sounds great, is anybody going to actually be left alive to witness this pipe dream? I guess it will be worth it to have cooked this planet to death just so the small remaining population might have holodecks and shit right?

A bubble can still pop for a technology that transforms the world. It just means a major correction will happen. The internet also transformed the world but the dot com bubble still popped. It all will depend on whether the current AI companies can survive long enough to make a profit
-
i mean if you're so convinced that it's a bubble, then it means that the stock price of those companies will eventually fall to below where they are today. So it should be pretty safe to short, or at least leave all your money in cash.

So.... Basically proved Nvidia point in gamers dont need 5090. If the argument is running your own agent you are competing for hardware against hyperscalers. That said 5090 /is/ by far a much more powerful beast than 5080 so this move is a blow to the balls. Nvidia is cannibalizing explicitly their gamer base for revenue growth. I'll remember…
-
Does that mean the main use cases for this would be coding pertaining? I heard some mention of graphics cards of this quality being used to avoid token based usage but I think I’m missing something. Are you open to clarifying?

An RTX 5070 is basically a toy because you can’t fit anything in 12 GB VRAM The RTX 5090 is the sweet spot if you are happy with running qwen3.8 27b, because it’s the cheapest GPU that allows you to run it at q4 or q6 with enough memory context to be useful and has the memory bandwidth and compute speed of the RTX PRO Blackwell versions. Not…

People get upset or offended, as if Nvidia wasn’t a business. Businesses are here to make money. They aren’t loyal to anyone but the highest bidder. Anyone who says they would be happy selling a card to games at 1/20 what they can charge datacenters and ai businesses is lying to themselves. At the same time, no one needs a 5090. The 90 series of…
