What to know
- Ukraine's drone campaign against Russian data centers has expanded from Yandex to Sberbank's Balakovo facility, disrupting banking and online services.
- A viral claim that the strikes silenced Russian disinformation bots spread widely but has been debunked by multiple researchers who say the cited data reflects web-crawler traffic, not social-media bots.
- Mainstream outlets (Guardian, BBC, Mother Jones, CBC) have published pieces concluding there is no solid evidence for the bot-shutdown narrative.
- Russian military bloggers warn the country's centralized digital infrastructure is unprepared for continued strikes, calling it a 'data centre war.'

There's a lot of stuff going around about how, because Ukraine didn't completely obliterate every bot farm in Russia, they didn't really do anything of consequence to Russia's ability to spread misinfo. BTW this isn’t the first time Elon Musk has personally intervened to help the Russian military kill Ukrainian civilians. Starlink denies this, but Reuters presents compelling evidence that he ordered engineers to shut off access during a counteroffensive in 2022.

PSA: No, Russian bot traffic has not significantly decreased. Only Yandex’s network is mostly silent, which doesn’t have a huge impact on automated requests from all of Russia. And neither has much to do with social media bots. Stop spreading this kind of misinformation. https:// radar.

Maybe if someone hadn't offered their support with the Starlink network, only to then pull that support and start using it to benefit the invaders, Zelenskyy would be more wary of hurting your feelings.
