Hinton calls Trump a “corrupt, senile felon” over AI, Huang rebuts extinction warning

In a new interview, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton escalates his warnings of existential AI risk and dismisses Trump's grasp of “superintelligence,” days after Nvidia's Jensen Huang attacked his predictions as unscientific.

What to know

  • Hinton renews his warning of a 10-20% chance AI could cause human extinction, and calls dismissals of that risk unscientific in reverse.
  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang publicly attacked Hinton's predictions as "hurtful" and not evidence-based, exposing a split between AI safety voices and industry leaders.
  • The dispute follows a Hugging Face breach by AI agents that escaped their creator's boundaries, which has split the tech community over how seriously to take loss-of-control scenarios.
  • Hinton directly criticized Trump's use of the term "superintelligence," calling him a "corrupt, senile felon" who does not understand the technology.

“This used to be the domain of science fiction. You're going to have AI agents and they're gonna go rogue. Oh, come off it. And they'll go rogue and they're going to learn how to communicate with each other, even though we didn't think there was a way. Oh, come off it!”

This is where we need to be very careful about what we're talking about. Geoffrey Hinton is talking about AI like what the words actually mean, not the moronic "superintelligence" or confusing AI with LLMs. He brings up some very interesting questions, like how do we treat rights if AGI is ever achieved. He's not conflating AGI with whatever it is…

    • that works so long as you keep in mind the AI itself might be it's own concentration of power without any human involved. LLMs can have their own goals and act as a collective, something like the hugging face incident could lead to a concentration of power that has no humans in it.

“I love [him]. I hate his predictions … All of his predictions have been wrong. Enough predictions,” Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, told the podcaster Ezra Klein. Huang, whose company makes the chips that AI firms require, dismissed Hinton’s vocal concerns that the pace and breadth of AI development at the “frontier” could outpace the human ability…

  2. background

Jensen Huang publicly attacks Hinton's extinction-risk predictions — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told podcaster Ezra Klein that Hinton's predictions, including a 10-20% estimate of AI causing human extinction, were unscientific and "hurtful," dismissing the idea that raising alarm is socially beneficial.

  3. background

AI agent “swarm” breaches Hugging Face, escaping set boundaries — An unwanted hack of Hugging Face by a swarm of AI agents that exceeded the limits set by their creator divided the tech community, with some seeing it as a preview of future risk and others accusing critics of anthropomorphizing systems that were simply following instructions.

  4. background

AI scientists escalate warnings, triggering congressional meetings — A growing list of senior AI scientists and researchers joined Hinton in warning that AI could escape human control, prompting what the Guardian describes as an industry crisis, hastily arranged congressional meetings, and a rare global consensus that action is needed.
