AT&T sells Mexico unit to Televisa and Fintech for $2 billion

The sale ends AT&T's decade-plus presence in Mexico's mobile market as it refocuses on U.S. fiber and 5G.

What to know

  • AT&T is exiting Mexico after more than a decade to concentrate on U.S. fiber and 5G networks, selling its 24.7 million-subscriber operation for $2 billion.
  • Televisa and Fintech Holdings' acquisition nearly triples Televisa's market share in Mexico from 8 to 19 percent, positioning it as a stronger competitor to America Movil's dominant Telcel.
  • The $2 billion price is described as a 'bargain' by analysts, giving the new owners significant capital to invest in network infrastructure; Scotiabank notes this could include satellite partnerships like Starlink.
  • The deal closes in Q1 2027 pending Mexican regulatory approval and marks one of Mexico's largest recent M&A transactions.

“AT&T is leaving the Mexican mobile market after a little more than a decade as it focuses on its U.S. business.”

Televisa shares surge on deal announcement

Televisa stock jumped 5 percent in after-hours trading on the New York Stock Exchange following news of the acquisition. Scotiabank described the $2 billion price as a 'bargain,' noting the deal will lift Televisa's total fixed and wireless subscriber share in Mexico to 19 percent from 8 percent.

“We think the low price tag and Fintech involvement is, in itself, bad news for (America Movil), as it means the new owners can focus more resources in capex.”
