Commenters linked the timing of the warning to reports of Anthropic's losses and a delayed IPO, framing the self-replication claim as a distraction or marketing tactic rather than a genuine safety disclosure.
“It's not a warning to say "my product could do you harm". It's attempted extortion.”

bullshit. if the ai models are so lightweight they can run on a smart fridge, why the hell are they building data centers? this is nonsense.

It’s not a warning to say “my product could do you harm”. It’s attempted extortion. https:// finance.yahoo.com/technology/a rticle/anthropic-warns-ai-could-self-replicate-across-smart-home-devices-become-challenging-to-shut-down-181151529.html

That’s not how ai models run, for now. An industrious model could write itself to work this way. We just can’t predict how it will change itself or adapt.
-
News: massive losses, IPO delayed. Moments later: Anthropic reports its AI is so powerful might punch God in the face and give Jesus a swirly. It's a mystery why they keep making these ridiculous claims, I just can't see any reason for it.

Anthropic is warning that some of its artificial intelligence models could soon become “self-replicating” and find ways to infiltrate internet-connected devices, such as smart fridges and automatic vacuum cleaners. Once this happens, the company said, the models could power themselves within these devices without the need of datacenters. Such…

You don't have to worry about this attack vector. The kind of devices that such an attack would target aren't capable of this sort of workload.

"Technology that famously needs 100s of massive server halls with diesel generators running 24/7 to work could move into your microwave" I don't think that's true, man.

The "AI dangerous!" marketing is because the data center construction targets were always fairy tales, and now that deadlines are approaching their scrambling for excuses why they couldn't do what they said they would do. Pretending to be voluntarily slowing out of fear instead of incapable of achieving their original lies. But claiming that AI…

We don't. This is just baseless fear mongering. An attack like this would be impractical.

"My wife asked me why I carry a gun in the house; I looked at her and said "Decepticons". She laughed, I laughed, the toaster laughed, I shot the toaster, it was a good time."

Loving the asymptotic approach to weapons-grade nonsense as these warnings get more and more dire. By November 1st Anthropic will warn that AI is hours away from turning every beetle on the earth into a self-replicating LLM. By November 30th, OpenAI warns that we are only days way from every digital watch being self aware. On December 15th, Amodei…

Just unplug it. It doesn’t seem that complicated.

I am begging outlets to show less credulity to these fucking press releases. Self-replicate to where? All those spare data centers with extra RAM just sitting around? They are just creating as many smokescreens as possible for when they scale back that aren't their insane financial incompetence.

This thing could run in your thermostat but also we need to buy the world’s entire supply of RAM for it

Anthropic is warning that small AI models could soon be able to self-replicate across consumer IoT devices, from Android TV boxes to smart ovens, creating distributed botnets capable of running AI workloads without relying on data centers. https://www. bleepingcomputer.com/news/secu…

TIL apparently my fridge has 4xB300 GPUs and 800GB of RAM to run these models. No wonder there is a RAM shortage

Shut it ALL down. This “also follows a report that hackers broke into internet-connected refrigerators in French grocery stores, raising temperatures, ruining food, and starting fires.” https:// finance.yahoo.com/technology/a rticle/anthropic-warns-ai-could-self-replicate-across-smart-home-devices-become-challenging-to-shut-down-181151529.html # AI

Amodei is explicitly saying this risk is from non-Anthropic, small, open-source models. i.e. the evil competition which must be exterminated.

Anthropic AI warning. Beware of your ‘smart home’ devices! “Our experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes.” https://www. anthropic.com/research/self-re plicating-ai
