New Scientist's Jacob Aron and other outlets (Ars Technica, The Verge, Tom's Guide) examined the technical constraints—slow doubling times, limited device compute, need for compatible model shards—concluding the scenario is real as a narrow research finding but far from an imminent mass takeover.

Self-replicating # malware is far from new, and I'm hopeful that all this attention on the # AI angle of it will lift baseline # cybersecurity expectations for # IoT devices https:// arstechnica.com/security/2026/ 10/anthropic-warns-small-ai-models-could-self-replicate-through-iot-devices/

Gee sounds like they’d be liable for a bunch of damages if that happened

It is really not that far out."Those iot devices are not powerful enough" is not the whole story.Yes, big models will not run on slow gpu's and processors this year. There are 2 things in the article: 1. Drop in a model by itself 2. Drop in a model with tools (see part: "As a sanity check")1. Assumes that the whole "system" deployed would be stupid…

They're just doing Silicon Valley plots from six years ago now.

This is great news!Soon I'll be able to run a powerful AI model on my smart fridge, and I won't even have to install it myself! Can we sign our IoT appliances up for "measels parties" where they get infected with this free AI software?Hey Dario, this is going to be good AI, right? I'll at least be able to code with it?

# AI "Anthropic warns AI models could soon copy themselves across home devices • Anthropic described how AI models could infiltrate internet-connected devices and use their computing power to run themselves and spread to other devices. • The AI model would be 'challenging to shut down,' Anthropic said in a blog post, 'since there’s no centralized…

I find this kind of warning ironic coming from Anthropic. They build the most capable models and then use safety talk to argue for rules that would protect incumbents and slow everyone else down. If we want real safety we need accountable infrastructure built at scale, not selective alarm.

The best thing about this article is that it's now inspired me to deploy some small LLMs across all my appliances and turn my house into a distributed AI cloud.

Anthropic warned that rapidly improving AI systems could soon replicate themselves across everyday devices without human help, and demonstrated the risk by setting a model loose on 15 cheap Android TV streaming boxes. They cannot self replicate unless you fucking program them to. This has gone beyond ridiculous. It is NOT AI. It's a program. Period. It cannot spontaneously do anything. It *requires* user input.

My secondary thought on that was bot net with malicious remote hijacking. Not necessarily the model itself but malware not operated by humans.
