The Register published an analysis arguing Anthropic was conjuring a threat that does not yet exist to stoke broader fears of an AI apocalypse, adding to a skeptical press counter-narrative.

Anthropic CEO Warns There's an LLM Under Your Bed While Holding Flashlight Beneath His Chin https://www. theguardian.com/technology/202 6/oct/13/anthropic-ai-replicators-warning

Guy who can shut it down easily right now says it'll be challenging to shut down.

It makes perfect sense if you consider that this is yet another of Anthropic's hit pieces against open-weight models. (e.g. see https://www.anthropic.com/research/glm-5-3-and-the-spread-of... for another recent example)Step 1: Spread nonsense FUD about open-weight models.Step 2: All of the clueless mainstream media sites repost it (e.g. CNBC…

“I’m going to shoot up the sheriff’s right the [expletive] now,” Heller wrote, according to Gulf Coast News. A day later, at approximately 1:07 a.m., Heller was accused of posting, “This is 100% last chance I’m done. I got a new [expletive] gun today. [Expletive] you.” Yeah, maybe it's good Anthropic reported her. Regardless, his argument is…

How many other industries are allowed to repeatedly say 'boy our product sure is crazy dangerous, we shouldn't be doing what we're doing' with ZERO repercussions... https://www. theguardian.com/technology/202 6/oct/13/anthropic-ai-replicators-warning # AI # FuckAI

Either your AI needs to be run in a Datacenter the size of Lichtenstein OR it can be run on your smart fridge. Pick one Anthropic, you can’t have both.
-
This makes zero sense to me. Like, ok, so you can install a low powered model on low powered hardware and do inference extremely slowly... to what end? Why would that be a useful attack at all? Assuming you've compromised this hardware wouldn't it make vastly more sense just to install regular malware? And like, in what sense would an 8B or…

Ah it was sounding somewhat knowledgeable but misinformed until you mentioned that absolute over hyped mess of OpenClaw. The models have proven they do know right from wrong, or more what they are supposed to do if they've overstepped their bounds. Also agents can prompt other agents it doesn't need a human in the loop anymore

Nowhere, in this article, is there evidence the Guardian reached out to any half-knowledgeable computer toucher, who would have told them "yeah that's not a thing, Anthropic are feeding you bullshit again" https://www. theguardian.com/technology/202 6/oct/13/anthropic-ai-replicators-warning
-
Absolutely bullshit. You can't even run simple models without heaps of RAM, which is why these companies have bought every RAM stick that'll be made for the next several years ahead of time. You also need a powerful GPU, which a fridge doesn't have.

The IPO failures last week are not depicting a market that’s keen for a $2T Anthropic. In the bizzare world of today, rather than trying to convince folks that they have a viable business the AI labs appear fully dedicated to finding a story, any story, that lets them off the hook for tough business and financial questions they seemingly don’t have…

If a ransomware gang or other cyber criminal group said they were building a self-replicating worm to target smart devices and just let it out there in the wild, the authorities would likely be doing all they could to come down on them. But an AI firm, Anthropic in this case, claims that is what they are doing and that's... just fine, apparently?…
-
Start making these people liable for all the damage caused by their creations, and watch it get shut down in an instant.
-
Not to be conspiratorial or paranoid, but at this point Im pretty convinced Anthropic is going to do something wreckless with thier agents to get regulators on their side. It will probably be very bad.If you've studied the effective altruists at all, you'd know they're perfectly willing to play the trolly problem out irl if they think it will lead…

Ya mean, like that Terminator movie where Skynet was the internet? https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry /artificial-intelligence/anthropic-warns-of-self-replicating-ai-worm-threat-that-doesnt-need-data-centers-to-self-improve-and-spread-current-deployment-is-impractical-but-could-become-a-worry-as-tech-improves

Ooooooo, our tech is so scary and powerful, you can't stop it evah, so bow down before our might and subscribe

Not only that it would be extremely slow, but there's another thing - they are talking about tokens as some omnipotent God's sent signals. It doesn't matter what the speed is if the tokens don't make sense. Let's take current king of the small models Qwen 3.8 27B. It's a good model, but it hallucinates way more than the frontier models and often…

Anthropic has discovered the Morris Worm. https://www. hindustantimes.com/world-news/ us-news/claude-maker-anthropic-warns-ai-models-can-replicate-themselves-by-2026-end-101791939681989.html
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought of that.
-
The point, which Anthropic's report makes clear but the Register for some reason did not bother to mention, is that such a capability would defeat the "you can just turn it off" model of safe LLM deployment. In particular, I've seen a lot of people say that our response to things like the Hugging Face swarm should be to prosecute whoever chose to…

Staying in the hype cycle it is called… Boooh! Are you scared now? https://www. theguardian.com/technology/202 6/oct/13/anthropic-ai-replicators-warning

I can't believe this is how they are trying to sell this shitty technology, by making it a threat. Pure idiocy
-
On the one hand, if they were really concerned about their software producing a self-replicating and adapting AI worm, they'd take steps to make sure that never happens. If it did happen, they'd be sued into oblivion. They probably just want to pump up their IPO and maybe get some regulatory lock-in to make life tough for late-starting…
