Steam's client now beats Epic's new AI-assisted launcher on startup time, and commenters treated the benchmark as an indictment of the whole 'vibe coding' trend. #gaming 1/4

I get what you're saying, but I'd argue it's the correct way to think about it. Valve's first priority is always to stay in business, and to do that they have to be profitable. Valve isn't immune to doing shitty exploitive things. They made battle passes and lootboxes. I'll be honest I'm having a hard time tackling your message. I don't know what…

Steam client and the Steam webpage still feels like it was stuck in the very early 2000s. Just look at the page source. Ridiculous. Maybe with AI they can finally replace both of those crapmountains. No proper gallery, terrible video viewing experience. Broadcast live right into your face. I mean they don't swim in moneypools, they can't afford it…

🎮 Epic Games' new vibe coded launcher has arrived in preview for Linux, Windows, and macOS, claiming 1.8x faster startup than Steam. Fortnite is finally coming to Linux via the new client thanks to Easy Anti-Cheat V2. https:// alternativeto.net/news/2026/10 /epic-games-introduces-new-vibe-coded-launcher-and-confirms-fortnite-is-coming-to-linux/

also to add context to this, they’re trying to gin up excitement about their implementation of AI across the board in their company/development cycle. all the while forgetting the headache that SEGA is facing for using AI in their remastering of Shogun2, which actually made the games worse. essentially they offered fans a $40 inferior version and…

On the other hand, OpenAI has recently successfully ported the abysmal performance of ChatGPT/Codex on macOS to the web (at least in Firefox) with no end in sight…Prioritization still matters. Agents will happily optimize your app for performance, but at least current ones seem like you need to explicitly tell them.

I'm playing a game I like to call, "Digital graveyard". 581 is my current score. That's the number of games I have on that platform. I've played none of them and paid for none of them. Forever ago I said I'd take Epic seriously when they finish building out their store as promised. The latest news only reminded me that today is Thursday and added…

It's such a ridiculous metric to compare on.My games desktop machine has Steam starting on boot. I literally never quit it. I could not give a single toss how long it takes to start.
-
That wasn't the question? You asked if its possible to measure this yourself. Yes it is. You buy a meter, stick it in the outlet and done. Not sure what you're trying to achieve here. And if you don't know how to plug a device into a socket and then another device into that socket... Well how did you get your to turn PC on in the first place?
-
Epic Games doesn't even have reviews for games, I don't know how they expect to be taken as a serious competitor to Steam, and I'm all for competition for the record.
-
Because it's not just startup time but thats what everyone is focusing on for some dumb reason. The main complaint I always heard about Epic was how sluggish everything was. Now it's fixed and everybodys acting like it was never a problem?
-
Both take way too long because of all that electron bloat. I miss being able to load a small app in under 1s. Everything has telemetry or online verification/updating now.
-
Dude it's so funny how pointless this is too. Like even if epic games launcher started 5s sooner than steam, do they really think that saving 5s of start up time was someone going to convince anyone to make the switch?
-
Misc speed improvements, security updates on old applications… I’m doing a lot of that lately, quite quickly.
-
I always turn mine off. Sleep for machines isn't the same as sleep for humans. The less runtime the better. Plus, ive got bills to pay. Less time idling = cheaper power bills. Who would've thunk
-
Well, you listed two reasons you turn off your PC for, I said one of them can be fixed. How would I know? Maybe you dream of keeping your PC on and the noise is stopping you lol
-
Except this isn't competition at all. Tim is desperately trying to prove their platform is better than Steam and Steam is a monopoly that ruins gaming industry
-
My storefront is better than your storefront! True consumer brain. Great job, reddit! Worship those corporations!
-
Epic is a fucking joke. The only reason Epic could only launch faster is because they have almost no features.
-
This will be true until it begins to not be in programming specifically inside roughly 18 months.
-
Completely blew their marketing campaign out from under them like an antipersonnel mine

Next thing you know Steam is going to be started before I even start my computer
