Starlink speed limits cut Ukrainian drone strikes, then restored after Musk-Zelensky clash
SpaceX quietly throttled Starshield terminals used by Ukraine's strike drones; Musk blamed Washington, Zelensky called it betrayal, and access was restored a day later.

What to know
- SpaceX imposed an unannounced speed cap (about 160 km/h, later lower) on Starshield terminals that Ukraine uses for mid-range strike and interceptor drones, disrupting missions.
- Musk says the restriction was set by the US government/Trump, not SpaceX, while Zelensky says Trump and Musk deliberately cut access and that people are dying as a result.
- Service was partially restored within a day at Fedorov's announcement and Ukraine's Defense Ministry later said full functionality was restored on Oct. 15, though the cause is still under investigation.
- The episode has triggered EU moves to let European telecoms jointly compete with Starlink, underscoring fears of dependence on a single private satellite provider.

This proves the danger of letting one company/person control critical satellite infrastructure; Ukraine and Europe should build alternatives.

The restriction was a US government/Starshield program decision, not Musk's personal call, and SpaceX owes Ukraine nothing.

Musk says the US government and Trump control Starshield limits
Elon Musk said SpaceX does not unilaterally set restrictions on the military-grade Starshield system, asserting that the US military and ultimately the president decide any speed or usage limits.
“Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.”

It breaks my heart to say that, and it is a serious question but... Is this the beginning of the end of this war? This drives home the point that depending on US companies for anything means you have to bow and pay tribute to the US regime or else they'll cut you off, even if the company itself doesn't want to. The US is currently an authoritarian regime without law.

I don't understand how it's "too far" in any way, provided that Russia has since the start of the war struck against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, including datacenters. The only way I can read this is as an example of heavily pro-Russian bias.

The temporal correlation with datacenter hits argued to take out Russian bot farms is striking...Normally I'd say "assume ignorance before incompetence before malice" but with the current US political climate it's usually all 3 at the same time.
-
The timing is interesting, given that it comes days after Musk said Ukraine had gone "too far" striking Yandex data centers. Putting other considerations aside, these strikes could be interpreted as direct retaliation against strikes on Ukrainian data centers days before. That said, depending on a single piece of tech is not a good idea (as…
