What to know

  • Nvidia's board raised its buyback authorization by $150 billion, bringing the total to $235 billion, the largest such increase ever, surpassing Apple's $110 billion 2024 authorization.
  • The company plans to execute the buyback through fiscal 2028, alongside management's projection of roughly 70% revenue growth for that fiscal year.
  • Stock reaction was mixed: NVDA rose on the news, but broader chip stocks did not uniformly benefit, and Nvidia's own valuation multiple remains near decade lows.
  • Online commenters are split on whether the buyback reflects genuine confidence in Nvidia's growth or simply reflects a lack of better uses for its cash, with some warning of an AI bubble parallel to the dot-com crash.

The dispute Whether the buyback signals genuine confidence in Nvidia's growth story or is simply a sign of excess cash with no better productive use, potentially timed poorly at all-time-high prices. · positions read across 42 posts and comments

The buyback shows genuine confidence in Nvidia's growth trajectory and it has little else productive to do with its cash.

  • “That’s a massive buyback boost Nvidia clearly seems confident in its long-term growth story despite the stock’s strong run.”

Buybacks at all-time-high prices are poor capital allocation, mainly benefit executive pay metrics, and a dividend would be more sensible.

  • “It’s stock manipulation. If a company’s execs compensation are partially based on metrics such as stock price and eps (not uncommon), just do a stock buyback.”

    UnderaZiaSun · Reddit ↗

This is a late-cycle bubble signal reminiscent of dot-com era excess that will end with a crash.

Analysts frame buyback as Huang's bet on AI buildout

Commentary characterized the record repurchase as CEO Jensen Huang wagering he can simultaneously fund massive AI infrastructure spending and continue rewarding shareholders.

“The record buyback is CEO Jensen Huang’s bet that he can fund huge swaths of the AI buildout while still rewarding his own shareholders.”

    • AOL, from around $10 to almost $200 in the build up, was bought out by Time Warner, then suffered a 90% loss. Amazon lost 96% of their value from before the peak to after the bubble burst. Apple was down to $3 per share. Sisco, SUN, Intel, Ebay, lots of big names got absolutely decimated. Tons of companies just went under. Lots of indices saw an…

    • They should be made illegal again. It’s stock manipulation. If a company’s execs compensation are partially based on metrics such as stock price and eps (not uncommon), just do a stock buyback. Boom, stock price goes up as do earnings per share even nothing has really changed in the underlying business and execs get a fat payout.

    • Intel has primarily been a CPU company. AMD was the only competitor and it was quite competitive between the two until the mid to late 2000s when Intel's illegal practices forced AMD to almost bankruptcy. Nvidia hasn't had a real competitor since like 2010 since AMD was just a ghost company until Zen came along.

    • Long before GPU use for AI, GPU was primarily used for gaming and CAD. Both AMD and INTC (which at the time was substantially the largest of the trio) tried to challenge NVDA for top GPU and failed. NVDA has been undiputed king of GPU for 30 years. Not only that, but the NVDA solution is an ecosystem with both hardware and software (CUDA). For the…

    • They likely genuinely believe their stock is undervalued. Jensen said Nvidia is "world's first and only growth value stock". So they're putting money where their mouth is. They grew about 100% YoY this year, and they project to grow ~70% next year at the low end, gated by supply. Forward PE is ~15-17. Companies growing much slower have higher PE…
